for PC components (one need not look any ftuhrer than the soaring costs of high-end GPUs).There's also the fact that consoles provide an industry standard hardware configuration. Where PC's can have a seemingly unending amount of both hardware and OS configurations, the console provides consistent building blocks for developers. Unfortunately many times this makes developers put console forth as the lead platform, which in turn can hold back the PC version.Another point to take into consideration is also the evolution of the 'casual' gamer. Casual gaming, originally dominated by flash games on the PC, is becoming bigger than ever before with the advent of smartphones and tablets. Console developers are tapping into this new interest market by expanding current generation consoles to become more 'app' friendly, making it easier for indie developers to release their casual games for their platform (Xbox Live Arcade for example). Add the fact that your console can also now become an entire home entertainment suite with apps like Netflix, Rogers On Demand, and Crackle (as horrible as it is), I'd say consoles are far from obsolete, but their role is indeed changing and expanding.
